Moto2: Simon finishes Aragon test on top

Julian Simon gave his hopes of securing that elusive maiden Moto2 victory a small boost as he dominated a two-day test at Motorland Aragon.

The Frenchman, who is yet to win a Moto2 race despite having stood on the podium nine times, was on track for the Mapfre Aspar team during a private testing session in which several riders participated.

Fastest on both days, Simon’s timesheet topping 1min 54.248secs was nearly a second quicker than Andrea Iannone’s pole-winning time at the circuit last season.

“I’m very happy with the work we’ve done across these two days at Motorland,” he said. “This is a track I really like and on which I’ve been comfortable from the very beginning.

“Our target for these two days was to fine-tune our feeling with the chassis, and we’ve done more than that. We’ve also had time to develop other things and to find the best solutions.”

Former MotoGP rider Aleix Espargaro was second fastest, ahead of Moto2 rookie Bradley Smith, while Javier Fores, Yonny Hernandez, Santiago Hernandez and Kenny Noyes followed.

In the 125cc category, Nico Terol was fastest on day one, but his absence on day two allowed Le Mans winner Maverick Vinales to snatch the fastest time of 1min 59.616secs.
